Many diseases of the eyes are often unnoticed for a long time. Even diseases that can lead to blindness cause hardly any symptoms at the beginning. This is why the eye check-up is so important to enable you good vision and thus a high quality of life.

From 40 years on visit your ophthalmologist regularly

At some point almost everyone will have to wear at least reading glasses. Even if it is “only” about glasses – visual impairments and eye diseases (e.g. glaucoma) as well as many other diseases (e.g. retinal damage caused by diabetes or high blood pressure) can only be detected early by an ophthalmologist.

Screen work can be accompanied by discomfort

With daily screen work of more than three hours, many patients complain of burning and dry eyes, a feeling of pressure or headaches. Computer glasses or well-fitted glasses or dry eye therapy can significantly improve the situation at work.

Diabetics and people with hypertension need to have their retina checked at least once a year. If a retinal disease is not recognized in time, the eye can go blind in the worst case.

The annual eye fundus check-up allows early detection of pathological changes of the retina, such as preliminary stages of retinal detachment, tumors that are located peripherally or the onset of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Glaucoma Screening

Glaucoma is one of the most dangerous eye diseases and, if left untreated, can lead to blindness. Therefore, regular check-ups are essential. Glaucoma screening examinations include intraocular pressure measurement, visual field examination and high-resolution tomography (OCT, optical coherence tomography) of the optic nerve (papilla). With OCT, damage to the retinal nerve fiber layer can be shown precisely – even before there are defects in the visual field.

Macular degeneration is a mostly age-related disease of the retina in the area of the center of sharpest vision (macula). The central visual acuity is gradually lost. Since this disease is not associated with pain, it is usually only recognized at an advanced stage. Unfortunately, a cure is not yet possible, but the progression can be slowed down if the disease is recognized at an early stage. Therefore, use the preventive medical check-up!

Preventive medical check-ups are particularly important for children. As vision is still developing, disorders such as ametropia and strabismus can only be treated in infancy and the earlier they are recognized, the better.

Für Kleinkinder sind zwei Mutter-Kind-Pass-Untersuchungen vorgesehen:
– 1. Mutter-Kind-Pass Untersuchung im 1. Lebensjahr (10-14 Monate)
– 2. Mutter-Kind-Pass Untersuchung im 2. Lebensjahr (22-26 Monate)

From the age of 3 you should let check-up your child eyes every two years.

Please bring the following with you to your appointment:

  • previous eye reports
  • Your current glasses
  • If applicable, your glasses or contact lens pass
  • Other relevant reports (e.g. internal findings, laboratory findings – especially HbA1c value in diabetics, neurological findings,…)

Dilating the pupils with eye drops is necessary for a thorough examination of the eye, especially the ocular fundus. This should be carried out regularly in the case of high myopia, diabetes, high blood pressure, certain eye diseases, but also with standard check-ups.

The effect of the pupil dilating eye drops usually lasts about 2 to 3 hours. You can also be a bit more sensitive to light and have blurry vision especially at near. Please note that you are not allowed to drive any vehicles during this time.

Children’s eyes usually have to be dilated with eye drops for an exact diopter determination (cycloplegia); the effect of these special drops can last up to 24 hours. Please bring a cap or sunglasses for your child to protect against glare.

BEFORE the examination, please DO NOT wear any rigid (hard) contact lenses for 3 days or any soft contact lenses for 24 hours, otherwise an exact prescription of glasses cannot be carried out. Please take your lenses or your contact lens passport with you to the examination.
